Notes for: Roger Wycliffe

The name of this Wycliffe comes from a Wycliffe pedigree in The History of Yorkshire; Wapentake of Gilling West, by Marshall General Plantagenet Harrison (1885). I don't know where Harrison got this information. I can only assume it is guesswork on his part from looking at old records. Harrison's pedigree seems to be the only one that goes back this far; so I will go with it for now.

About him the pedigree says "Roger de Wycliffe, Lord of Wycliffe and Ulvington, held the fourth part of a knight's fee in Wycliffe, Thorpe, and Girlington, 6 Henry IV [abt 1405]. Was a man-at-arms in the French wars. Died before I Henry V [abt 1413]." His wife is not named.

I don't necessarily agree with the pedigree concerning this Roger's children, but I will list them here:

1. John de Wycliffe, Esq., Lord of Wycliffe and Ovington, was a man-at-arms at the battle of Agincourt, 3 Henry V [1415]. Held the fourth part of one knight's fee in Wycliffe, Thorpe and Girlington, 6 Henry VI [abt 1428], which Roger his father formerly held. He also held one knight's fee in Warleby of John Duke of Bedford as of the House of Richmond, 16 Henry VI [abt 1438]. Defendant in a plea at the suit of William Holthorpe touching the payment the 30 lb which he agreed to give his daughter on on marriage with the plaintiff's son by deed, June 7th, 26 Henry VI [abt 1448], and which plea came before the great assize at York 32 Henry VI [abt 1454]. He married Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas de Rokeby, Knight, Lord of Rokeby and Mortham.

2. Thomas de Wycliffe, was a lancer under the banner of Lord Blomtlete at the battle of Agincourt, 3 Henry V [1415], and was at the muster of the English army at Southampton, 8 Henry V [abt. 1421]. He had a wife and children, but they are not listed in the pedigree.

3. Henry de Wycliffe, was a man-at-arms in the retinue of Sir William Bowes, Knight, at the battle of Agincourt, 3 Henry V [1415], and was at the muster of the English army at Southampton, 8 Henry V [abt. 1421]. He had a wife and children, but they were not listed.
