Obituary, Garefino Funeral Home, Lambertville, NJ.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Richard "Dick" Coleman, of Lambertville, New Jersey, on July 23, 2025, at the age 97. Born April 28th, 1928, in his grandparent's (Holcombe) farmhouse on Goat Hill Road, Lambertville, where he grew up on Cottage Hill, built his own home there in 1949, and married the love of his life, Ruth Bodine Coleman, "Sis". Dick was a proud member of Amwell Lodge No. 12 since 1959, and a 4-time Master of the Lodge. In 1975 he served as a Grand Chaplain for the NJ State Grand Lodge, where he developed many close friendships. He was also a long-time member of the Lambertville Presbyterian Church, a board member of the George Prall Fund, (established to help Lambertville citizens in need), and a dedicated volunteer fireman for the Union Fire Company in Lambertville since 1945. In the days of his youth Dick was selected to be a participant of “The New Hope Experiment,” where apprentices were chosen to do studio and farm work, under the direction of renowned architect Antonin Raymond. It was there that Mr. Raymond determined that Dick had the potential to be an aspiring architect, offering him schooling in NYC. For various reasons Dick's family passed on the opportunity, and he remained in Lambertville where he went on to build houses and other works of fine cabinetry with his father, Alfred. In 1964 he took a job with the NJ State Museum where he remained employed until his retirement in 1987. Dick loved sharing his talents with others. Over the years he told numerous stories of replacing the roofs of family and friends, lending a hand laying a foundation, constructing an addition, cutting down a tree, or simply making a repair. He was always happy to help or to teach others his skills. After over 30 years of annual vacations in Maine, and once retired, he and Sis set out across the country to camp and explore as many sites as possible. They often travelled with their good friends (and grand lodge buddy) Bob & Betty Babcock (among others). Age and diminishing eyesight finally managed to ground them back in Lambertville, but they spent many more years enjoying the company of their three granddaughters, and spoiling them terribly. He was so very proud of each of their educations and accomplishments. Dick managed to continue to live independently in his home another six years after Ruth's passing, mowing his own lawn, shopping, cooking, and doing his own laundry, right up until he was placed on hospice at the age of 95˝. The family wants to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Clover Meadows, Lawrenceville, who were very patient, caring, and kind to him over the last year and a half. Richard is survived by his only child, Nancy Gallagher and her husband, Michael “my boy Mike”; his grandchildren Elizabeth (Kevin Dobes), Samantha, and Emily Gallagher; his “baby” sister Alberta “Peanut” Powell (Ronnie); and many nieces and nephews (especially grateful to his nephew Doug and his wife JoAnne who lived next door). Predeceased by his parents Alfred Thaddeus Coleman and Mildred Snyder Coleman, his wife Ruth Bodine Coleman, and his siblings: older sister Dorothy Bodine (William), younger brothers Donald Coleman (Arlene), Karl Coleman (Karen), Earl Coleman (Ann), and Robert Coleman. Calling hours will be Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Garefino Funeral Home, 12 N Franklin Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:00 pm. Private burial will take place at the Holcombe-Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance & Rescue Squad, 70 Alexander Ave, Lambertville, NJ 08530, at https://lnhars.com/donate/, or the Princeton Child Development Institute, 300 Cold Soil Road, Princeton, NJ 08540 at https://pcdi.org/
